Construction Industry Breakfast Forum

Pinsky, Recchia Headline New York Building Congress Forum

The New York Building Congress released New York City Construction Outlook 2011-2013, its annual review and forecast, at an October 26 breakfast forum featuring New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) President Seth W. Pinsky and City Council Member Domenic M. Recchia, Jr.

Building Congress President Richard T. Anderson provided a detailed overview of the forecast to the more than 300 people who attended the event.  The Building Congress report anticipates a stable outlook for construction in 2011 and 2012, followed by a steep decline in spending and employment in 2013 (for more information, see www.buildingcongress.com/press/2011-10-26.html).

During his remarks, Mr. Pinsky outlined a wide range of initiatives being undertaken by the Bloomberg administration to augment New York’s bedrock industries while also nurturing high-growth industries, such as bioscience and clean technology, in which New York City has inherent competitive advantages.

Mr. Pinsky also provided a progress report on the City’s effort to redevelop 60 acres of underused land at Willets Points in Queens.  “We are on the cusp of realizing this half-century-old dream.  Today, the City controls more than 90% of the privately-held land in the portion of the site that we anticipate will be developed first.  In the coming weeks, we expect at last to put shovels in the ground on the first part of what will be $150 million in off-site infrastructure work that will connect the site to critical City systems.  And, as I speak, EDC is in discussions with several private developers, each of which responded to our May RFP for the site's first phase – a first phase that could result in up to 12.7 acres of new construction, generating as many as 4,600 construction jobs and 1,800 permanent jobs.”

Council Member Recchia, who serves as Chairman of the City Council Finance Committee, expressed his commitment to infrastructure investment while detailing his intensive efforts to secure a major rezoning of Coney Island in 2009.  Council Member Recchia was instrumental in in securing passage and ensuring the community’s need for affordable housing and year-round jobs were met.
