New York Building Congress Launching ‘Building the Future of New York’ Report Series

Organization to Unveil Next-Century Vision for Planning and Building New York

New York, NY (November 8, 2018) -- The New York Building Congress is launching a new report series, “Building the Future of New York,” to help our region reach its most crucial infrastructural and building goals. Culminating in our centennial celebration in 2021, the Building Congress will be releasing quarterly reports featuring substantial proposals and ideas to help shape our city’s future.

The goals of the series are to springboard real conversations between stakeholders and begin to move the needle on some of the region’s big picture challenges, as well as inspire policy makers and the public to return to a spirit of aspirational planning and building by proposing substantive projects and significant administrative reforms that could engender a new century of growth and success.

“For New York to continue to be a global city and the capital of the world, the time to not only dream big, but put the shovels in the ground, is now,” said Carlo A. Scissura, President & CEO of the New York Building Congress. “To compete on the world stage, we must reimagine our entire physical landscape – everything from our transit system to our roads and bridges to our public spaces to healthcare and education. These proposals may seem aspirational, but New York must see itself in this vision and reshape our city if we are truly going to continue to lead the world.”

Our region’s transportation, housing and environment are now hitting the outer limits of what they can accommodate – and each requires not only increased investment like what is already coming from the construction industry, but big, bold thinking to meet the growth of our region head on.

The series’ first report – to be released later this month – will focus on transportation and land use. Specifically, the report will explore how we can develop underutilized land, spur residential development and build out our transportation network around the five boroughs in order to accommodate an influx of new residents.

Future topics of the report include:

  • Subway Expansion
  • Fixing NYCHA
  • Parks and Public Space
  • Waterfront and Resiliency
  • Airports and Regional Transportation
  • Sidewalks, Streets & Highways

The reports will draw from a broad array of sources and the expertise of leading economists, planners, industry executives, and public policy professionals.
