Report outlines City's Construction Workforce

Crain's New York, Lizeth Beltran, 2.21.2020

A snapshot of the city's construction workforce found that a majority reside in the five boroughs.

The report, produced by the New York Building Congress, found that 73.7% of the construction workforce in 2017 lived in the city. The remaining workers came from New Jersey (9.7%), Long Island (9%), the Mid-Hudson region (6.3%) and Connecticut (1.2%).

“The building industry should be proud of the strides it has made toward creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce,” Carlo Scissura, president and chief executive of the building congress, said in a statement.

More women are working in construction. They now make up 9% of the workers. It's the first time since 2010 that the number has increased.

The report also found that most of the workforce is made up of individuals between the ages of 25 and 54, with 77.3% within that range. Workers older than 55 make up 17.5%, and those younger than 24 make up about 4%.

Overall, 80% of the city’s construction workers are employed in the private sector.

When it comes to earnings, workers are not faring as well. More than half of all New York City construction workers reported annual earnings of less than $50,000, with 27.8% earning between $50,000 and $100,000, and 15.4% earning more than $100,000.

The building congress used data from the 2017 Current Population Survey, which is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. It is the latest data available.
